Peoples LGBT+ United Society

As we celebrate Pride month of 2026, we are reminded of how recent events impact the greater LGBT+ community. A universal truth of being LGBT+ is that some of us feel comfortable being open about our identities and, unfortunately, some of us are at points in life where we do not. Some of us get to take to the streets wearing rainbow face paint, waving transgender flags, and cheering on our local pride parades in joyous liberation and solidarity. Some of us stay home because family, workplaces, or local communities do not provide a safe space for nonconforming representation. Grassroots movements like Pride and It Gets Better are pivotal to the LGBT+ community. They provide those who do not feel safe expressing their true selves with an assurance that there are others who feel how they feel, live how they yearn to live, and that a brighter future is possible.

While those of us who feel safe celebrating and showing solidarity take to the streets and online spaces, we all know we would like to do so with vocal and legislative support from all levels of government. Despite moments in the past where the federal government has made advancements towards LGBT+ equality, the current administration is fighting to ensure our community is treated like we are second-class citizens. There is no question that our community, like many others in America currently, is under attack. As such, it appears as though the major themes of Pride 2026 are defiance and solidarity with other oppressed communities.
Instead of having our celebration amplified by our government, we will celebrate in defiance of the attacks against us. We will use Pride to remind our entire community that we are here and proud despite the presence or absence of external support. We will reach out to make connections between individuals, groups, and organizations to provide stronger safety nets for our communities. We have been given a clear reminder by this administration that LGBT+ liberation is synonymous with LGBT+ struggle. Struggle necessitates solidarity. Stand strong, be safe, and remember that this struggle is not new to us. Be proud of who you are not just during Pride month of 2026 but always!
